The Undergraduate Psychology Study Program, Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), organized a public lecture titled “Becoming a Skilled Counselor: Practical Approaches in Individual and Group Counseling” on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. The event was held from 08:00 AM onwards at the 3rd Floor Auditorium, Abdullah Sigit Building.
The lecture featured an international speaker, Prof. Dr. Siti Aishah binti Hassan from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), who is well recognized for her expertise in individual and group counseling. This activity was designed to strengthen students’ practical competencies in counseling.
During the session, students were introduced to a range of counseling techniques, from foundational to advanced levels. The materials covered essential aspects such as building effective counselor-client relationships, therapeutic communication skills, and strategies for managing group dynamics.
Importantly, the lecture emphasized practical, experience-based learning rather than purely theoretical discussion. Students gained insights into handling clients from diverse backgrounds and adapting counseling approaches to various real-life situations.
Student enthusiasm was evident through active participation in discussions. Questions ranged from practical counseling experiences to challenges faced in professional settings.
This lecture provided valuable learning experiences for undergraduate psychology students, particularly in preparing them to become competent future counselors. It is expected that students will be able to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skills relevant to professional demands.
Through initiatives like this, the Undergraduate Psychology Study Program at UNY continues to promote applied, contextual, and competency-based learning for its students.
