UNY Undergraduate Psychology Students Promote Environmental Awareness through Eco Enzyme Program in Kulon Progo

Kulon Progo – Students from the Undergraduate Psychology Study Program at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) participating in the 2026 Community Service Program (KKN) conducted a community education activity on the production of eco enzyme in Gegunung Hamlet, Bumirejo Village, Lendah District, Kulon Progo Regency.
The activity was one of the flagship programs of the KKN-R GEN 19 group, implemented on February 7 and February 9, 2026, under the supervision of Dr. Pasca Tri Kaloka, S.Pd., M.Pd. The initiative was led by Nadya Aiswhara Harmona, an undergraduate psychology student at UNY, together with a multidisciplinary KKN team. The program was initiated after observations conducted by the KKN students revealed that household waste management remains a challenge in the community. Organic waste is often discarded or burned without proper processing, which can lead to negative environmental impacts.
As a practical solution, the students introduced eco enzyme, a liquid produced through the fermentation of organic kitchen waste such as fruit peels and vegetable scraps. Eco enzyme has multiple benefits and can be used as a natural cleaning agent, liquid fertilizer, and deodorizer. The activity targeted members of the Women Farmers Group (KWT) who play an important role in household activities and environmental management at the community level. A total of 18 participants attended the activity, which consisted of presentations, discussions, and hands-on demonstrations on how to produce eco enzyme.
Through an educational and participatory approach, the students not only delivered theoretical explanations but also encouraged participants to directly practice the eco enzyme production process. Participants showed great enthusiasm, actively engaging in discussions and expressing interest in implementing eco enzyme production at home. This activity demonstrates how community-based educational approaches can effectively raise public awareness about environmentally friendly waste management.
In addition to providing new knowledge to the community, the program also produced several tangible outputs, including eco enzyme products, a practical guide module, and documentation in the form of photos and videos. Through this initiative, UNY undergraduate psychology students contributed to promoting behavioral change toward more environmentally responsible lifestyles while also demonstrating the real implementation of student community engagement.
